188. Author: hurricane_jimmy Date: Sat 4th Apr 2026. 00:25 Well, yes, the Cheeto is an erse and does talk a load of p*sh but there are several ways to bring down an aircraft other than an air defense system. I`d be looking at the number of sorties vs the number of aircraft lost in the air...so far that amounts to 1 x F15E and 8-10 x Reaper UAVs...you can also include the F16 downed by friendly fire in Kuwait and the C135 that crashed in Iraq if you want or even the C135s damaged on the ground in Saudi...but that still pales in comparison to Desert Storm which lasted 43 days and saw the US lose 40ish aircraft. The Institute for the Study of War (who are usually pretty spot on) is saying that the US has carried out 8000 sorties and the Israelis about 12000 thus far and I think it`s Day 35? Reply
189. Author: OzPar Date: Sat 4th Apr 2026. 05:01 It is getting on for 50 years since I visited Kharg Island. I was a young deck officer on a 250,000-ton supertanker that had called in to load a cargo of crude oil. Back then, we were told that our load would represent one dayâs oil usage in the UK. Today, it may struggle to provide 12 hours. But it gives you a clue as to how vital shipping is to an island nation like Britain. After lunch on board, the chief officer and I decided to stretch our legs and take a walk up to the town that we could see a couple of miles in the distance. We got permission from the oil terminal boss and set off along a road in our white boiler suits, which protected us well from the blazing afternoon sun. There wasnât a lot to see, to be honest. My abiding memory is of a rocky, low-lying, undulating landscape that was coral-like in its structure, interspersed with thorny bushes that I guess could really do you damage if you were crawling through them in a conflict situation. Kharg Island is small, just a few miles long. It is open and exposed. There are no hiding places. Even I, a military novice, can conclude it is poorly suited for a ground assault. So, what the hell are the military experts in the Pentagon doing? This could end up as a turkey shoot. Well, it looks like a lot of them are in open revolt against Trump, Pete Hegseth & Co. In the past 24 hours, there have been a host of sackings of senior military figures. Well, the official line is they were sacked, but how likely is it that they are refusing to carry out orders that will kill their troops? Reply

Author: The One Who Knocks Date: Sat 4th Apr 2026. 07:37 I`m more worried that this is the Trump administration continuing to gut the military of principled individuals who won`t allow him to tear up the constitution and remain in power indefinitely. And although my eyes were open They just might as well be closed Reply |
191. Author: OzPar Date: Sun 5th Apr 2026. 10:23 It can`t see Trump surviving (physically or politically) beyond the northern summer. He is a very sick man. By then, surely matters in the Gulf will be more certain, one way or the other. To be honest, I wouldn`t fancy his chances. In what was effectively its first response to the US-Israeli attacks, Iran struck American bases across the Gulf region and continued this offensive to the point where a dozen US bases were destroyed and unlikely ever to reopen. Trillions in investments over 40 years, gone. Worse still is the belief among the host nations that they have been duped. that the US was never there to protect them, but to provide an advanced proxy defence for Israel. When the Iranian missiles arrived, the American defences were nowhere to be seen. Four weeks on, where are we? The US is considerably diminished across the globe, distrusted by those Gulf states, and desperately seeking an off-ramp to a war it has no prospect of winning. It may keep pounding bombs into Iranian soil, but 94 million Iranians know their key munitions are safe deep underground, and still plentiful. Eventually, the Americans will run out of bombs. Iran has ended free transit of the Strait of Hormuz, moving the shipping channels north, routing vessels inside islands close to its coast. Tankers, container ships, and other commercial vessels now transit the Strait under strictly controlled conditions: an Iranian checkpoint that says yes or no, Iranian pilotage, and for those that get through, a payment of $2 million per ship paid in Chinese yuan. Just as ships pay fees to transit the Panama and Suez Canals, so Iran has monetised the Strait of Hormuz. Every barrel of oil from Gulf countries is effectively taxed a dollar by Iran. Sanctions will end, but they no longer matterâIran will get rich. And here`s where things get interestingâthe key condition permitting tankers to transit the Strait is that the buyer of the oil, the consignee, must pay the shipper, who owns the oil, in Chinese yuan. In one deft move, the petrodollarâwhich protected the American economy for 50 yearsâis effectively dead. Iran has pre-empted BRICS on de-dollarisation. Expect things to accelerate from here. More than half the world already accepts Iran`s new regulation of the Strait. Also, importantly, the shipping and marine insurance industries have accepted it. This is a historic turning point. American sanctions on countries like Iran, Russia, Venezuela, Cuba, etc., are coming back to bite them. The US broke its promise by weaponizing the dollar and SWIFT. Now, payback is coming. Iran is by no means a perfect society, but it is nothing like the clichĂ©d fundamentalist theocracy painted by the West. From where I sit, the mullahs appear to provide oversight and general policy guidanceâfor example, Khamenei`s refusal to allow nuclear weapons on religious grounds. The politicians and the military provide the active direction. (Continued...) Post Edited (Sun 05 Apr 10:24) Reply
192. Author: OzPar Date: Sun 5th Apr 2026. 10:32 Continued...) Just take one look at the leadership of the Iranian government (I hesitate to call it a regime, that`s something more suited to the current occupants of the White House): Iran today is run by PhDs, scientists, doctors, engineersâpeople seeking to advance life. The US is run by grifters, property developers, PR agents, lawyers, and ideologues delivering death. Compare and contrast the way each side has executed the war. Go figure who the smart ones are! The New York Times now concedes that the recent riots in Iran were sparked by CIA and Mossad meddlingâan old trick: incite rebellion, then use the government`s reaction to justify attacking it. The Bay of Pigs, Syria, Libya, Kosovo, Ukraine. The expectation that the Iranians wish to return to a Shah is farcicalâhis regime was far worse by any measure. If anything, it is a return to the situation that existed pre-1953, before Mossadegh was deposed and replaced by the Shah, thanks to a CIA-organised coup. Iranians are a great people with a rich culture maintained over 2,500 years. Trump`s ignorant threats and deadlines will not work. The old Middle East has ended. Israel`s days are numbered. The Greater Israel project will never happe. What comes next is a wholly different ecosystem. And much of the West is not going to like it very much. Reply
