Josh Cooper has signed a one-year deal per COWS.

Anyone else find NL’s comment a bit odd?

“He’s come from part-time football. His first season was difficult making the adjustment, but he’s got talent. He needs to have a good pre-season.”

The last bit sounds to me like he’s been set a bit of a challenge — almost as if his place in the squad isn’t guaranteed unless he really steps up.

Or am I reading too much into it?

Im guessing the final piece is that he needs a good pre season to really prove himself fit enough for full time football. Hard transition from part time to full time so now its been a year he needs to prove himself this pre season that he’s ready.

He`s only been given a one year deal so that also possibly points to it being a challenge to him

Last season he trained with us for a while before he was offered a deal but I`m not sure if he took part in pre-season training. Maybe NL thinks that could make a difference this season.

What little he played, definitely had some instinct about him, so it`s a no brainer to extend for a year, I felt if we let him go would be an opportunity missed.

If he doesn`t perform, there`s not a great deal of damage - we will have options by then.

Clearly he knows what`s needed, needs to bulk up, have a good pre season.

I think he will be fine.

Maybe Lennon’s laying down the gauntlet to him. “you’ve got a year, prove you`re worth a new deal.” Could be his way of saying this is your time, step up or ship out.

He was our second-top scorer last season, so for me, he’s earned at least a proper chance. Fresh season, clean slate no excuses now. The ball’s in his court. If he wants to stick around full time football then this is the year to show it.

Interestingly transfermarkt have him appearing on 23 occasions. I thought it was less than that.

c'mon the pars

If the lad could get a bit stronger in possession he could do well also the type that creates space for others with more intelligent running and taking up positions.

Can’t see him him playing too many games if we’re expecting top 4 but it’s a chance to really see if he’s capable of stepping it up. For me he’s a better prospect in there than Todd who looks to have plateaued at a lower championship level and from some games last season that’s being generous.

You would have though we’d let everyone we could release away as we needed a fresh start, so far it feels like Hamilton, booth and cooper staying suggests there will be more limited changes, perhaps looking for a season of progress rather than messily competing for top 3.

You would take it if we finished comfortably in the top 6 and looked dangerous in attack to be fair.

I think this season for the new owners they will be feeling their way. Small steps. The general direction appears to be focus on development and infrastructure in parallel with competing in the championship. I can`t see any investor throwing money at it. It`s investment and return on investment. That benefits the club either way.

Lennon clearly thinks there is potential in Oakley-Boothe and Cooper, and we know there is potential in Todd (and Tod). If he can get the team confident enough to play aggressive, high press, attacking football, confident they have a solid defensive base behind them, then things could get exciting. I`m happy for them all to have a year fighting for places in the team to show they can deliver in that way.

Last season (and since we returned to the champ) the fear of losing has been tangible most games which really hampers attackers from being fluid and uninhibited, and taking the kind of risks that are often needed.

Let`s see how Lenny can get them playing.

On another point - all the anxious posts on this site about the state of the squad at this point are just silly for me. We are obviously going to sign a good few players in the coming weeks, so why not just chill out for now and take stock when its time for the first league game?

Most of the players who have only one year left will be away at the end of this season unless they really step up. They have one last opportunity to impress.

Being realistic if we make top four this season then that will be a huge improvement and with another summer transfer window I think it will be a big push for promotion the following season..

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

Priority surely needs to be a keeper? We let half the team go so we should be seeing a fair few signings.

"Last season he trained with us for a while before he was offered a deal but I`m not sure if he took part in pre-season training"

he was here from the very first day of preseason last season.

but not in midfield unless they are going to have 10+ players there? other areas need tweaking, the midfield needed a rebuild, not re-signing potentially 4 players when there are doubts over all of them and also when you have 3 under contract who have their own doubts. with the same players, i can see the same problems occuring.

Whose `doubts` are you referring to? The manager may not share the `doubts` of supporters, most of whom can`t agree amongst themselves. That`s why football clubs employ experienced professionals to make those decisions. They in turn know they will live or die by those decisions.

Doubts as in failed to impress under at least 2 managers as our results were poor last season and the midfield struggled to create anything and keep hold of the ball.

We now have loads of centre midfielders and none of them have shown they can take us higher than struggling in the championship.

Like mcpake before him, Lennon might find loyalty to inherited players is not the right path. It’s not like they improved that much under Lennon apart from mullan helping us be better at the back meant we got a few more points.

Looking at what we have here’s hoping for a couple of good wingers/wing backs and a good attacking centre midfielder who are all starters.

The midfield is a real worry. No way is it good enough at present. I suppose it is if we’re aiming to be near the bottom of the league again.

It seems a bit premature to me to criticise the midfield before the recruitment is over. It`s also disrespectful to discuss Lennon as if he was some kind of novice rather than a manager who has won titles in Scotland`s two top leagues.

At the minute, its not a play off pushing midfield. Still plenty of time to bring in 2-3 quality midfielders though.

The bit that baffles me is when fans say “oh he’s not good enough, glad we never signed him” about players that played in teams finishing well above us last season. If that were the case, they’d be in League One.

Shocked that our resident expert is getting in a lather about our squad in the first week of June.

The window has just opened for goodness sake. It will remain open for almost another 2 months.

Stop the whinging and have a bit of patience.

Angus Gunn injury last night has shown why players will also want to get deals wrapped up fast - he could be out for months and may be without a club till Jan for all he knows. I think that anguish was shown on his face last night knowing it could hinder him getting a club now.

Also, the window may have just opened, but you can sign players whenever you want.
