The worst thing about some of our best players leaving is that they`re going for free.

Agreed, I don`t know why the club can`t tie our better players to an extended contract, with a clause to allow them to leave for a fee, instead of leaving for free.

It`s incredibly difficult to keep good players at this level if their deals are running out. It`s easy pickings for Premiership sides or lower leagues in England that can spend significantly more than the Pars can and offer a higher level of football which is enticing.

Can`t blame Matty at all, his stock has probably never been higher and you don`t know if he`ll get another chance at going up a level. I`m sure it was a really tough decision for him but sometimes this is what happens in football. I really felt he could`ve been a player that could`ve spent his entire career with us, but it wasn`t to be.

Best of luck Matty, go and smash it.

A club like ours simply doesn`t have the cash reserves to give all our players really long term deals. If we need to terminate their contracts (for whatever reason) then we could be left with some significant financial liabilites.

No one can tie anyone to a contract they don`t want

We already have signed up a number of players on 3 and even 4 year deals- how much longer do you want the club to be exposed for?

These are just the breaks, we and other clubs will always lose players on frees, just as we sign good players on frees.

At what point would you have offered Ngwenya a 5 year contract for example? No one could predict how he would improve. Ditto Matty Todd, he was as out of the picture.

If Matty goes to St.Johnstone it is kinda similar to the George O`Boyle situation, all be it back then they were coming down and now they are going up.

If he is Perth bound, it`s maybe time to stop singing songs about O`Boyle, he should be in our hall of fame not the pantomime villain.

The situation is nothing like when OBoyle moved to St Johnstone

It`s similar in some aspects, different in others.

We are not getting 200 grand for Matty and he will not be playing in the same league for instance.

He is signing for St. Johnstone on freedom of contract, for footballing ambition and probably for better money.

See if a club has a budget of 200k for a player to cover the transfer fee and his wages, then they can offer an out of contract player 200k in wages. If that player wants a step up when he approaches the end of his contract, he’s not going to renew his contract allowing the club to charge a transfer fee of 100k if it means he’ll only get a salary of 100k. That’s why it’s nearly impossible for a club to keep a player who wants to leave as he’d be severely limiting his earning potential

Good luck to the lad and he needs to experience a different club etc.
I have no doubt he will do well as he has the desire to get better.

Good luck to him. I always quite liked the kid, could make things happen, and was a good crosser of the ball.

When I was looking over the out of contract players though, I was thinking, is he the sort of player that can take us to a higher level and I wasn`t convinced, he`s done okay but he`s a mid table Championship player in my opinion. Obviously, my opinion isn`t worth a jot, compared to Simo`s if he is going to go to the Super J`s.

I do feel slightly let down by Matty as well, The Pars have put a lot of time and money into developing him as a player, they have been really patient, helped him through injury, kept faith that he would come good, and when the first offer comes along, he`s off like a shot.

I`ve often felt like that about footballers, r-s-p. While they`re at a club they benefit from top class health and medical care and physical training which often restores them to match fitness which the club doesn`t always benefit from before the player moves on.

So much for kissing the badge and thumping your chest, wouldn`t have got a game for Kelty at the start of the season!💰💰💰

As I see it, we`re all Pars fans, but Todd is also a pro footballer. You have to assume that he`s been offered a better deal than the Pars did. At this point, he had a decision to make. Move to another club offering more money and security to play at a higher level, or remain with the club he`s emotionally attached to.

It`s a no brainer.

Two or three suggestions that he wasn’t good enough to take us to next level, but Matty is exactly the type we need. He’s a developing footballer that would have grown to be better for us next season and the season after.
Who will we entice to join us for the salary we offered him ? We’re not paying salaries for “peak of career” players. If Todd was on £30k a year and was offered a substantial increase, say 75%? Then that’s still only £52.5k a year. Not a lot in the career of a footballer.
Matt only has one career and has to take every opportunity to make the most out of it. I’d have liked him to stay. I think he could have contributed to us winning promotion.

If our offer couldn`t persuade a Pars fan to stay what chance have we got that JCM and KN will accept their offers?

They could see them both as saleable assets and give them enough to stay - with the expectation that we get promoted and cash in at some point. It`s a gamble but that seems to be the business our owners are in. They`ve also only been here a year or two.

Todd, in my view, is not ever going to be sold for a bundle of cash - so the offer is likely to reflect only the value to the team. He`s also been here 8 years, so may well prefer a new challenge.

"kept faith that he would come good, and when the first offer comes along, he`s off like a shot."

Rubbish, 9 months ago the club had no faith in him & told him to find a new club. If the club had faith he would come good then they would`ve offered him an extension like they did with Cooper etc, but instead they were asking him to leave.

People forget how precarious these players` careers are. If you fail at the Pars, or even end up sidelined with an injury for a while then the next step down is part time football. We`ve had loads of players over the last 10-15 years that looked decent, but never kicked on & ended up part time, or even retired by 30.

Matty is backing himself to go up a level, and quite right, he`s done well against the prem teams this season. If he kicks on he could have a great career, if he fails then he can come back to the level we`re currently at anyway.

It`s a sore one for the pars but Matty has to do what`s right for him. And at the end of the day, the reason he`s going on a free is because the pars failed to see the potential in him, and didn`t have faith in him until it was too late.

I agree.

I heard he got a real rough time from NL when he first arrived. To be honest, probably deserved but Matty reacted and improved. Fair play, says a lot about him as a person. however now that’s he’s had a good a season as he has, he’s looking to move up after being so close to moving down 🤷🏻‍♂️ maybe NL being hard on him was what he needed at the time but maybe what he needs now is to move on.

Scottish football is small, you’re so close to the top and bottom at the same time.
