Unfolding as planned? Let`s see, if the US had declared a 10% tariff on every nation then there would have been a response. As it was they declared far, far higher tarriffs on most nations and most nations were formulating an immediate retaliation. Now the US has said `no it`s just going to be 10% tariff on everyone but China`. Rest of the world sounds a sigh of relief `phew that could have been a lot worse, let`s cancel our counter tariffs` even though there is still going to be a 10% levy. That percentage is probably low enough that US companies will tell their foreign suppliers to swallow that increase by reducing their prices, essentially a flow of money from foreign companies to the US treasury.
Of course that still leaves a trade war between China and the US which will impact all of us. As the African saying goes, when two bull fight it`s the grass that comes off worse.

The EU has paused, not cancelled, its counter-tariffs.

The US stock market is still screwed, just a tiny bit less so than yesterday.

Trump didn`t think this through and was forced to blink by his financial masters.

He wrote on his social media platform “Buy now!” a few hours before he backtracked.

Insider trading. He did it on purpose.

The EU has paused its response for ninety days. The US 10% tariffs are in place now.
The US stock market is now higher than it was a year ago, in fact it was higher yesterday morning than it was last January as well.
I`d hoped this one single policy might have been Trump`s downfall but of course it isn`t. Either by accident or design he`s got the win, at least in the short term.

Alternative view - he`s just shown countries, particularly China to find other trading countries as he`s unhinged. He keeps saying people don`t buy American. Does he ever stop to ask WHY? I`ve no idea about cars in the US. But how can companies from Europe and Asia import cars (assuming they aren`t made in Mexico) and still sell them cheaper than US made vehicles?

Oh I mean it`s all bonkers and makes no sense from an economic viewpoint. Certainly none that I can see. I mean the economic model for making garments and trainers in the USA or even Europe for that matter isn`t going to work for Nike, Adidas and the like so they will never be able to relocate manufacturing. At least not without massively increasing the cost of their products. The same can be applied to so many other sectors that have been farmed out from America to other shores. That`s why this has to have a political motive behind it (as well as the corrupt enrichment element of course) and what that motive is I still quite can`t work out. Large sections of the American right and all of the far right are in awe of Putin`s Russia and they dislike Xi`s China. Both nations though are `partners without limits`. There seems no coordination in the US long term geo strategic manuvering at the moment.

They reckon that the lower share prices will allow investors to scoop them up, then tariffs will be reduced or removed, share prices rise and investors are quids in!

Well, rumour was Trump sold stocks off before announcement, guilty of insider trading?🤔😲🤞

Trump only flirts for ratings.

Lots of valid points raised on this post and a heckuva lot of questions as well.

The truth is that America abandoned their manufacturing powerhouses and relocated to cheaper locations with lower wage demands, tax burdens and terrible human rights record in order to satisfy the American consumers desire for cheaper products.

Sometimes relocating US manufacturers enjoyed massive government grants and subsidies to sweeten the relocation deal.

It was US consumerism and corporate greed that created the max-exodus of US manufacturing in order to be more competitive.

Now Trump is punishing almost every country in the world for the actions of their own corporate world.

The basic economic result of this will be market upheaval, at least in the short term, with empty shelves that will fuel increased prices from both greedy US manufacturers or from import duties.

He keeps saying nations are queuing up to make a deal and `kiss his ass` (he`s a real charmer) but there are never any details.

The Sphincter in Chief is very good at missing out the Bn`s they lost on other days though... he was probably referring to the value of their companies.

That being said, there`s surely going to be some dodgy deals in there too.

He`s now quietly allowed exemptions from the tariffs on Chinese imports like cell phones and other electronic goods.

Yeah i definitely gave Trump and his cronies way too much credit. Their capitulation has been quicker and deeper than I thought it would have been.

Nvidia announce a $500 billion investment in US semiconductor manufacturing. Maybe he does know what he is doing after all.

Have to admit I think Trump is an absolute eejit but two things he does have right is that (I) Europe needs to up it`s military spending and defend itself & (II) China needs to be dealt with properly for not following the WTO rules.

Very curious what the motivation was behind putting tariffs on other partners though - perhaps just to prevent China from saying that it`s discrimination? Then again they could say that with the fact they`re the only ones who it wasn`t paused for. All that said it could have just been him trying to play the unpredictability card.

Make no mistake though, the CCP are FURIOUS about the tarriffs and pretty scared because it`s only going to exacerbate the youth unemployment crisis in China and strain an already stagnating economy. Businesses I work with are ramping up efforts to move even production abroad to Vietnam and Indonesia but that`ll likely be hit too at some stage. The Chinese government will never admit this publicly though because to do so would be a huge loss of face. Another funny thing I`ve noticed recently is the difference between the Chinese- and English-langusge websites for different Government bodies - red communist and loaded with "we will fight America" on the Chinese ones but blue, neutral and bigging up Xi Jinping`s activities on the English versions, making no mention of tarriffs. Best thing the EU could do now if follow the Americans lead on this one and stick higher tarriffs on Chinese goods. More folk really need to realise the difference between what China puts out in the Anglosphere and what they`re telling their own people.

Iran is an example of idiocy on Trumps part though - he was the one that ripped up the old nuclear deal and now wants a new one. The Iranian regime though isn`t the most safe in terms of being able to hold power - Iranians I worked with in Germany said it was pretty much just the religious and old folk that actually support the Ayatollah and that it was pretty much bungs that kept it in place.

This had been planned for a while and long before Trump introduced his Tariffs. America has been building up its chip making capabilities for the past 3 years: The threat of China annexing Taiwan was the catalyst. To the point that should China invade the TSMC owned foundries in Taiwan will be razed to the ground to ensure China cannot manufacture in them.

Don`t think any of the US chip manufacturers will be running for years. Those facilities take a very long time to set up

Should be up and running next year

American beef producers are somewhat distressed that China has decided to cancel importing beef products from the US and shift this US$1.6bn business to Australia.

Thanks, mate!
