Multi club ownership/involvement is quite interesting in these situations. Loan or permanent is maybe less important.

Surely the ramifications of a deal like this will finally convince the sceptics that getting your business completed early in the transfer window is just a fantasy for a club like ours?

So do you think we have been working on this deal for a long time, wee eck ?
Looks like an opportunistic deal that’s just come about.

I think you’re fishing slightly, Eck. We signed Gilmour early in the window and he’s already proving a great bit of business, so I’m not sure it’s a fantasy. It also shows there are still deals to be done throughout the window. I won’t be casting much judgment on him until he’s actually in the building and we’ve seen him play. Yeboah and Hampson arrived with big expectations, Hampson was posted missing and Yeboah was a dud. Hopefully this one’s different, but we’ll find out once he signs and plays.

I think we`ve probably been working on various deals but the number of variables we can`t control mean it is very difficult to get one over the line. I would have thought that was pretty obvious to someone like you, Raymie, who knows how football works.

My comment was aimed at dandys "senior" player from the English championship. He is not, he`s a youth that`s had a transfer fee paid on him in the past. My expectations of this signing sit similar to the other highly rated kid we got from Sheffield utd in January. This isn`t a massive signing or a marque, it`s a young kid who`s been bombed out after 4 months of being a Sheffield.

Andy Campbell was a million pound player back in the day, didn`t make him a good signing for us.

Signing somebody like Gilmour from League 1 and giving him the chance to play in the Championship is a lot easier than trying to sign an experienced player who has hopefully played at a higher level but will be willing to play in the Scottish Championship.

From what I`ve heard the club is desperate to get the required quality and won`t compromise despite the pressure to get things done quickly.

That’s absolutely correct, which is why we’ve signed a number of players either from lower leagues or young players with potential.
Our rivals have managed to sign more experienced players from higher leagues. That doesn’t mean they will work out but the end of August is fast approaching. I wonder why we can’t get these over the line? It’s good that we have got off to a positive start otherwise the fans would have been more vocal on this topic. We certainly need a few older heads and some creativity to go with what we have.

I`ve tried to explain why we find it hard to get them over the line. As far as I can see most of the experienced players who have been signed by Championship clubs are past their best and looking for a final pay day. We did try to sign Easton without success which just proves my point I think.

Recent rumours suggest we were interested in Kirk, who attracted interest from England, and Cosgrove, who didn`t want to return to Scotland. What can you do in the face of these kinds of obstacles? You keep on trying.

So my question still stands – who exactly is this “marquee signing” folk keep banging on about? Just feels like another throwaway line out of Football Manager. Gilmour was nowhere near a marquee signing, yet he’s easily been our best bit of business in the last few windows.

What even makes someone a “marquee” anyway? Hampson came in with a fair bit of a reputation and hype. He ended up with 3 appearances totalling 36 minutes while looking bang average at best.

We’re in a situation where lads who’ve been released from a higher level, or have that bit of experience, aren’t exactly going to rush into signing with us and I get that. That being said though we’ve done well getting some business done early this time, signing Gilmour and keeping JCM. Last window we left it late, panicked, and ended up with a couple of duds. I`m hopeful we’ve learned from that. So getting business early has its pros and cons and so does waiting until the 11th hour.

NL said a few weeks ago that it might take until the end of the window to get what we want. He has a better grasp of how things work that many fans do.

What happened to the 1 maybe 2 that were close last week? Seems to have gone quiet or is the Sheff U player one of them?
